"CRHP" began as a renewal weekend at Holy Family Parish in Cleveland in 1969. The members at Holy Family found the enthusiasm and positive response to this initial weekend overwhelming. The program exposed participants to the effectiveness of shared ministry and motivated them to build a Christian community that understood that Jesus Christ was its center.
During the 1970's, news of CRHP's success at Holy Family motivated other parishes throughout the Cleveland Diocese to adopt the program. Through the 1980's and 90's CRHP spread to 750 parishes in 62 dioceses across 27 states and received the recommendation of the renewal office of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Today, CRHP continues to promote the development of vibrant faith communities and full service parishes by transforming the hearts of committed believers.
Christ Renews His Parish is a program designed to bring members of a parish together in Christ. The emphasis during the weekend is on small group participation. The process is centered around witnessing by presenting team members. Discussion and sharing is enjoyed by all participants.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CRHP?
The Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) program is a spiritual retreat experience which brings adult parishioners together in small groups in order to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and each other. It stresses a clear focus on the Gospel and provides a way to relax, unwind and reflect on our sometimes hectic lives.
What happens during the weekend?
The actual Renewal Weekend takes about 20 hours of your time, early Saturday through Sunday afternoon. It consists of small group participation, witnessing and sharing by previous members; exercises in community building; and small group sharing set in a scriptural and prayerful atmosphere. It also provides those attending with an opportunity for experiencing deep personal conversion through prayer and reflection. This experience would hopefully initiate a process of spiritual growth, Christian community building, good old fashioned fellowship and lay ministry formation. The weekend may be an opportunity for you to respond to a closer and deeper relationship with Christ.
Who may attend?
CRHP is open to all St. Edna parishioners and/or other Catholics in our surrounding community who are at least 18 years of age.
When and where do the weekends take place?
The weekends are conducted using the various parish halls and meeting rooms.
How long do the weekends last?
A typical weekend begins at 8:00 am on Saturday and will end by 2:00 pm on Sunday. However, a number of different formats are being tried, so make sure to check the specifics for your retreat.
Where do I sleep?
Activities will be stopped in time for you to return to your home and get a good nights rest and return refreshed for the next days activities.
What about food?
Meals are provided by members of the parish. There will be opportunities during the weekend for regular breaks for coffee, soft drinks and snacks. If you have a special diet, please let us know when you register so we will be able to provide for your needs. You will find that you will eat extremely well.
What should I wear?
Casual and comfortable clothing is appropriate and highly encouraged. The key is to be relaxed.
What about the sacraments?
An opportunity for Mass and reconciliation will be provided.
How much does the weekend cost?
The weekend experience costs the parish approximately $60.00 (per person). A contribution is not necessary, however, any amount that you can hep to offset would be greatly appreicated. Checks can be made out to Saint Edna Parish with "CRHP" in the memo line.
How can I be contacted in an emergency?
An emergency number will be given to you before the weekend which will be answered by one of the weekend team members. Cell phones, pagers and watches are discouraged since they detract from the retreat experience.
You have to experience CRHP...
Christ Renews His Parish is a renewal process, which calls together the
members of the parish in order to experience personal renewal, and
thereby renew the entire parish community. It includes evangelization,
formation, shared ministry, community building, prayer - and usually much
laughter.
So what is it? It is hard to explain the experience of CRHP - it has to
be EXPERIENCED. In some ways, it is comparable to a retreat. The
weekend is led by a team - the former participants of the previous
weekend, who have spent 12 months in formation. There is a lot of
witnessing by team members, group and individual prayer, small group
participation. Hopefully, among the participants, there will be a number
who will discern to participate in a time of formation, then present the
weekend for the next group of participants.
I have experienced the Christ Renews His Parish process as one that is
very powerful. For me, a parish community needs to be about
spirituality. We have to continually seek ways of building upon our
spiritual lives. We need to encourage prayer - both personal and
communal. We need to seek out people's giftedness, and help them to
discern God's will for use of that giftedness. I believe that Christ
Renews His Parish is ONE way of accomplishing that. Perhaps through this
process we can uncover other ways of doing so.
Christ Renews His Parish is not a secretive society; as I mentioned
above, it is difficult to explain the process in this limited space - it
needs to be EXPERIENCED. Christ Renews His Parish is open to every adult
in the parish. To begin the process we had to discern a group of men and
a group of women who would be invited to the first weekends. Invitations
are both personal and general. You may be invited by letter, or you may
receive an invitation through the pulpit or bulletin. Whichever way you
are invited, please know that all are welcome to this process; and we ask
that you be open to this manner of renewal. But also be aware that
because of our limited space, if you respond too late, you may be put on
a waiting list, or have to put off the weekend until the next time.
If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me at the
parish office. We do have spaces available for the upcoming Men's
and Women's Weekends! I also ask for your prayers for the success of this
process of Renewal.
Perhaps in the past you have faced little challenge to your spiritual
development; perhaps even now you are in need of some sort of spiritual
renewal. Consider one of the upcoming weekends - it could change your
life!

Some Testimonials...
In the midst of the hustle and bustle, keeping track of our business hours and our children's schedules, every once and awhile we get a feeling something may be missing in our lives. While we spend many hours teaching our children the value of religious education, we rarely have the luxury to "re-educate" ourselves. The CRHP weekend offers such an opportunity - to slow down, to reconnect with God and with our parish members, to evaluate our direction in life and to choose a spiritual path that makes us happier in all aspects of everyday life. Consider joining us for a weekend that hopefully and prayerfully will affect your life as positively as it did mine!
I had never been on a retreat before, and wasn't sure what to expect. That made me just a little nervous. Would we have to spend the weekend in silence? Would I be forced to recite all those prayers I learned in school and have since forgotten? It was much more than I ever expected. It truly was a fun-filled weekend. Not only did we laugh together and pray together, but boy did we EAT! CRHP helped to renew me in so many ways! Long-lasting bonds were created with some wonderful women whom I may never have gotten to know so well. Their strength, courage and support have inspired me in some of my weakest moments. CRHP has brought me closer to God, taught me new ways to pray, and just brought a sense of peace to my life. That doesn't mean that CRHP has solved all my problems and that I'm done growing in my relationship with God, but when I falter, I've got some great friends to turn to for spiritual support. So when you hear the skeptics say "CRHP is just a recruitment program for volunteers," don't listen to them. Listen to your heart and the Holy Spirit who's calling you to get involved in an experience you won't regret!
My experience on the retreat weekend is something that is very hard to put into words. When the weekend was over, my heart and soul were at peace for the first time in my life. I've always been searching for a place to find comfort, and I had finally found it that weekend. I now live my life with Christ in it, and live each day the way He would like for me to live it. My faith has truly been renewed. I thank the church for the opportunity and my wish is that everyone will take advantage of the retreat weekend. It truly is an amazing experience.
The CRHP weekend was a wonderful way for me to get away from the pressures of everyday life so I could spend time on my spiritual growth. It's people like me who say they don't have time for CRHP who probably need it the most. I found that it didn't take long to "let go" of work, home, etc. so that I could really benefit from the weekend and the new friends I met. Through the weekend and the ongoing formation team, I've met several special women with whom I feel a new bond. And, of course, my spirituality has been revived!
Christ Renews His Parish was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. I had recently lost my mother and was depressed. I didn't think I would ever feel whole again. As I listened and prayed over the weekend, I could face some of the issues that had been burdening me. What I heard, I already knew and sensed, but I was renewed, and I know that God loves and accepts me, no matter what. The Holy Spirit can strengthen us, if we will only let Him guide us through prayer. Take time to nourish your soul, and give God the time to bring you in touch with His loving care.
Whatever preconceived notions you have about retreats are the same ones I had before I went. I could think of a million reasons not to go, but a friend who attended a retreat prodded me into going. Right from the start, the retreat was nothing I could have imagined. I learned the power prayer and scripture can have in my daily life. Before the retreat, I would attend church to fulfill my "obligations," but now I attend to practice actual faith, to grow in my spirituality and to experience God in the community. Everyday life takes on new meaning now. I've been hit with some of life's toughest problems since the retreat, but after being filled with the Holy Spirit and using prayer, I was able to face those problems without fear, knowing that our God would take care of me, and He did! I urge you to take the plunge, give up two days of your time, and get to know Jesus not as someone learned on Sunday, but as the closest friend you'll ever have!
What I found at my weekend was a support group of my peers like nothing I had ever encountered before. I made friends with people I probably would never have talked to, even though I might see them every Sunday. What I also found was that some of the things that were going on in my life were going to be life-changing and I would need my faith in Jesus to be able to face my upcoming challenges. Without the experience of CRHP and the support of my fellow brothers in Christ, I don't think I would have been able to continue on in my normal everyday life (during those challenges). Anyone who thinks that a renewed relationship with Christ would be of interest to them should consider going to the next CRHP retreat. I guarantee you'll come away with the most positive change of your life.
It's difficult to find the correct words about the CRHP weekend I attended. But I've come to realize that as far as my spiritual life before my retreat, the "door" was just ajar. Now it's opening more and more everyday. I'm a stronger and better person now because I see God in my life on a daily basis and I don't assume He is there just because it was taught to me in school. It's wonderful to feel capable of being able to help others see that Christ is in their lives at all times and not just when we think we need Him.
My CRHP weekend helped me discover the Lord in new and special ways through the witnesses and examples of the CRHP team who served and ministered to us. This quiet time away from the daily grind allowed me to "re-collect" myself, and draw closer to the Lord, especially in prayer. I was deeply moved by the commitment and dedication of the CRHP team that cared for us all weekend. I'm so glad I gave myself the special gift of a CRHP weekend.

Christ Renews His Parish Continuation Committee
Dear Friend,
You may have experienced a renewal of a Christ Renews His Parish weekend here at St. Edna’s. Hopefully, your CRHP experience was an enriching and growth-filled experience.
For us, the CRHP weekend lit a fire within and put us on a path of personal growth and a deeper relationship with Jesus. But the weekend was just the beginning. During Formation, we came to realize that CRHP is a call to discipleship and service through the various ministries of the Parish and to the CRHP process itself. It is in this spirit of service that we are forming a CRHP Continuation Committee.
In the tradition of Christ, the committee will be a gathering of servants, not a meeting of managers. Those who answer the call to serve on the Committee will be asked to use their talents in coordinating & assisting with specific activities as requested by the teams in formation. These activities can include help with invitations, kitchen prep & clean up and prayer.
We ask that you take a few moments to pray and reflect on the CRHP program and its meaning in your life. If you feel called to make a commitment to the continuation of the CRHP process or would just like to learn a little more about the vision and mission of the Continuation Committee, please contact one of us to let us know.
